It all began with railroad worker Rodolfo Maserati, his seven children and their passion for engineering and speed. In 1914 Alfieri, Bindo, and Ernesto opened a car workshop and built 2-litre Grand Prix cars for Diatto. One of their first Maserati won the 1926 Targa Florio (an open road endurance race). The company then dabbled in racing cars with 4,6,8 and 16 cylinders. The company did hit some rough spots but remained strong throughout their toughest ordeals.
