Another bombardment of news on our capital occurred when the Supreme Court on Dec, 16th passed the order to ban the registration of diesel cars having an engine capacity of more than 2000 cc in Delhi. The ban will be effective till March 31st. While on one hand the automobile enthusiasts wish they could go on a hibernating mode on the other hand the environment activists feel they can finally strike off one issue from the list.
This christmas won't be much of a merry one for the automobile industry who will get a major blow from this ban. It is said that approximately 12000 cars worth 1000 crores are already lying with the dealers which have a bleak possibility of selling since the demand drops drastically after the order.
Delhi has been one of the core markets for SUV's and Luxury cars. Out of the 38ooo luxury cars sold almost 18% are in Delhi. But at the same time Delhi has also been said to be one of the "Worst Polluted Cities" by World Health Organisation.
From Mahindra to Mercedes, as the press is popularly printing, everyone feels the brunt. In the SUV segment Mahindra, Toyota and Tata face an alarming situation as their famous cars such as XUV 500, Innova, Tavera and like have an engine above 2000 cc capacity.
Not just SUV's but the Big daddies of automobile such as Mercedes, Audi and BMW will also face the consequences. Amongst these the worst hit is going to be Mercedes since almost all its best cars from A Class to GLE all are above 2000 cc capacity.
