Vintage and Classic car owners can now register their cars and drive them on public roads. As per an Amendment of the Motor Vehicles Act published in the Official Gazette, Vintage and Classic Cars that are more than 50 years of age shall be registered in respective states are per the rules of the Motor Vehicle Act. These cars will be given a special VA Series of number eg DL VA XXXX for Delhi state. Being registered and compliant under the MV Act shall allow users of these cars to ply their vintage and classic on public roads. The earlier ban by the Transport Ministry and various Courts meant that vintage and classic cars came under the rule that banned petrol cars of 15 years and older and diesel cars that were 10 years or older from plying on public roads.
It was argued that vintage and classic cars are an important part of motoring history and are purchased to preserve their historic value. These cars are not used for commuting or transport. Owners sparing use these cars for rallies or exhibitions and for maintenance reasons to ensure that they remain in a functional state. The blanket ban on these cars made for an anomaly and made their ownership in cities cumbersome. The Ministry took note of this and passed an amendment to permit these cars to ply on roads subject to certain restrictions. The restrictions are that these cars shall not be used for commercial purposes and that these cars shall not be used for regular use. This means that for rallies and exhibitions, these cars are permitted to be driven.
Please note that in order to comply with the MV Act, the new Registration Copy, valid Insurance, and Pollution Under Control Certificate should be present.
In Delhi state where the rules are enforced strictly, the State Transport Department has begun the process of registering cars under the new series.
Now one can register their cars! Since Delhi cars have already begun being registered. Get the vintage or classic car on the roads of Delhi with proper documents and registration.
